Hope Rising from the Shan Mountains

Myanmar Southern District Pastors’ Conference in the Shan Pioneer Area

Dear Partners

Grace and peace to you from Myanmar.

These days, much of Myanmar is suffering under extreme heat reaching over 104°F, along with the deep pain of ongoing civil conflict. Yet in the midst of this hardship, God provided a place of unexpected refreshment. From April 28 to May 1, we gathered in the mountains of Shan State for a pastors’ seminar, where the mornings were cool and gentle—dropping below 65°F. For many of these pastors, it felt like stepping into a place of rest that God Himself had prepared.

But more than the weather, it was the presence of God that renewed us.

A Pioneer Work Becoming a Movement

Over the past five years, the Shan Pioneer Area has grown from a fragile beginning into a vibrant and multiplying ministry. What was once a mission frontier is now becoming a strong network of faith, with 10 churches, 10 pastors, and 13 preaching points. Next year, this work is expected to be established as the Myanmar Eastern District. This is not just organizational growth—it is a testimony that the Gospel is taking root in a region where it was once barely known.

Your partnership has been part of this story from the beginning. You are helping build something that will last for generations.

Strengthening Strategy and Spiritual Foundations

During the seminar, we spent time strengthening both the strategy and the heart of ministry. In the mornings, I shared about pioneer church planting and how to raise local leaders who can sustain and multiply the work. In the afternoons, our focus turned to the deeper foundations of ministry.

District Superintendent Rama spoke with great conviction about the importance of the pastor’s family, reminding us that lasting ministry flows from a healthy home. Rev. John challenged the pastors to cultivate a deeper spiritual life rooted in God’s Word, while Rev. Jubilee emphasized the critical importance of children’s ministry and investing in the next generation.

As we listened and shared together, it became clear that these pastors are not just enduring hardship—they are being formed into leaders who will shape the future of the Church in Myanmar.

The Pastor’s Kids: A Living Picture of Hope

One of the most powerful moments of the seminar came through the PK (Pastors’ Kids) Camp, supported by Nazarene Compassionate Ministries. About 20 children gathered, many of whom are growing up in the middle of conflict. Their schools have been disrupted, and their families carry heavy burdens. And yet, when they came together, we saw something beautiful.

We watched them draw their dreams on small pieces of paper. We heard their laughter as they sang and played together. We saw them tie simple bracelets on one another’s wrists—a small but meaningful sign that they belong to one another.

Most importantly, we saw them begin to understand a truth that will shape their lives:
“I am a child of God.”

To us, these children are not just part of the ministry—they are the future of the Church in Myanmar. Your support is helping them believe that they have a future, even in the midst of uncertainty.

Joy, Fellowship, and Healing

God also gave us moments of joy and healing. In the afternoons, we set aside time for fellowship—playing archery and soccer together, laughing and reconnecting as a community. On the final day, we traveled to Inle Lake, where pastors from Yangon and Shan spent time together sharing stories and building relationships.

In a country marked by division and conflict, these moments of unity are deeply meaningful. They are a reminder that God is still at work, bringing His people together.

Protected by God’s Hand

Our journey was not without danger. Traveling through steep mountain roads in heavy rain, one of our vehicles overheated, and another vehicle carrying District Superintendent Rama was involved in an accident. Inside was a pastor’s wife who is five months pregnant.

By God’s grace, both mother and baby were completely safe. Once again, we were reminded that God is watching over His people in very real ways.

Thank You for Standing with the Pioneers

Dear friends, thank you for standing with the Shan Pioneer work. Because of your prayers and generosity, churches are being planted, leaders are being trained, and children are finding hope in Christ. Your partnership is not just support—it is truly a lifeline for this growing movement.

Please continue to pray with us. Pray for the Shan Pioneer Area as it prepares to become a new district. Pray for the pastors and their families, that they would remain strong and encouraged. Pray especially for the children, that they would grow into bold leaders of faith. And pray for God’s continued protection over this ministry in a very challenging environment.

We are deeply grateful for you. You are part of what God is doing here.

With gratitude and hope,
